Hummus

I place the chickpeas in the bowl.

Water engulfs them, overflowing.

Some shed off their confining skins,

Eager to break loose.

I peel the skin off the more reticent ones and watch.

How they shimmer!

My fingers sense the excitement in their freedom.

Arguing, despairing, comforting, embracing,

How can anyone resist these golden warriors?
