GEORGE ROUY, born in 1994 in Sittingbourne, Kent, UK, is a contemporary British artist known for his evocative and transformative representations of the human form. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Camberwell College of Arts in London in 2015.
Rouy's work explores the complexities of identity, desire, and the human condition in our technology-driven 21st century. His paintings often showcase amorphous, androgynous figures that blur the lines between gender and form, reflecting the fluidity and ambiguity of contemporary existence. Drawing inspiration from both digital culture and classical art, Rouy creates compositions that evoke the softness of focus found in camera lenses as well as the disruptions of digital glitches.
His approach to the body exemplifies contradiction and continual transformation, exploring themes of harmony and turmoil, ecstasy and alienation. Rouy's figures, often depicted in contorted poses, transcend the edges of the canvas, urging viewers to engage with the psychic and emotional turbulence they embody.
Rouy has exhibited internationally, with notable solo exhibitions including "Endless Song" at the Nicola Vassell Gallery in New York (2023), "BODY SUIT" at the Hannah Barry Gallery in London (2023), and "Belly Ache" at Almine Rech in Paris (2022). His work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as "The Echo of Picasso" at Museo Picasso Málaga in Spain (2024) and "Present Tense" at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in the UK (2024).
In 2024, Rouy joined the roster of Hauser & Wirth, becoming the youngest artist represented by the gallery. His work is included in several prominent collections worldwide, including the ALBERTINA Museum in Vienna, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami, and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris.
Rouy continues to live and work in Faversham, Kent, where they push the boundaries of figurative painting and explore the ever-evolving narratives of human identity and experience.
