MELODY TUTTLE (Des Moines, Iowa, 1985) is a Brooklyn-based figurative painter who works with oils on canvas and wood. Melody graduated with a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 2011. After graduation, she lived several years in Providence and Chicago before deciding to move to New York to pursue a career in painting full-time.
Melody’s paintings in this issue of The Pasticheur address female identity and ritual. The multifaceted spectrum of emotions manifested by solitude - loneliness, self-reliance, and everything that exists in between, informs each piece. As such, the subjects of the paintings are metaphors and symbols of what exists in the female archetype.
Each piece gives an impression of quietness, stillness, and reflection. Yet, the bright or contrasting colours take us to individual selves and identities, all part of humanity, leading us to reflect on our selves and identities, beyond gender.
After her father’s passing, Melody became interested in vanitas symbolism, or the ephemerality of life and inevitability of death, which the viewer may find in her most recent work. She is currently working on a new body of work and continues to explore these ideas in it.
