
PIXY YIJUN LIAO (b. 1979, Shanghai, China) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work provocatively challenges conventional narratives surrounding gender dynamics and intimacy. She earned her MFA in Photography from the University of Memphis in 2008. Liao's acclaimed series, Experimental Relationship, delves into the complexities of her relationship with her younger partner, subverting traditional gender roles and power structures
Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Fotografiska in New York, Stockholm, and Tallinn; Rencontres d’Arles in France; Asia Society in New York; the National Gallery of Australia; and He Xiangning Art Museum in China. Liao has received numerous accolades, such as the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Photography, the Santo Foundation Individual Artist Award, and the Madame Figaro Women Photographers Award
She has participated in artist residencies at institutions like Light Work, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Center for Photography at Woodstock, the University of the Arts London, the School of Visual Arts, Pioneer Works, and the Camera Club of New York. Liao's work is held in several public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Light Work in Syracuse, NY; and the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung in Germany
