CÉLINE NIESZAWER
(the grounded self, the artist in the world)
Céline Nieszawer’s work moves with the quiet certainty of someone who understands that an image is never only an image. She began her artistic life in New York, apprenticing with Martine Barrat, where she learned that the camera can become a listening device, a companion to human presence. Returning to Paris, she developed a practice that crossed photography, cinema, drawing, and text, guided by a belief that each medium reveals a different aspect of truth.
Her early years as a press photographer unfolded alongside commissions for album covers and advertising campaigns, spaces where she searched for the boundary between public face and the private self. In 1998 she received the SACD Prize at the Cannes Film Festival as co-writer of À Table, the beginning of a film career that expanded into short films, documentaries, and experimental video. Whether filming the painter Erró or tracing the American landscape in Promised Land, her work has always explored how stories move through bodies, landscapes, and time.
Her exhibitions across Europe, from Paris to Hamburg, Berlin, Lodi, Brussels, Basel, and Amsterdam, show a steady commitment to the image as inquiry. Doppelgänger at NextLevel Galerie marked a pivotal exploration of the mirrored self, while projects like La Madeleine de Gide reconsider the historical figure not as muse but as agent, witness, and enigma.
Nieszawer is also a writer, and her books with éditions Tohu-Bohu reveal an artist who moves fluidly between word and image. Claude, 365+1, Donald, Harmonie, and Guacamole Vaudou extend her interest in the thresholds between narrative, memory, and visual thought.
She lives and works between Paris and Milan. Across all her work, Céline Nieszawer seeks the moment when representation gives way to revelation, when the visible world opens into something more interior, more searching, and more human.
We are honored to offer this glimpse into her work in her grounded self. More of her work may be explored on her webpage and Instagram account.
