SPELL
after Robert Creeley
And in the evening I will take
a brew and sleep
will seem like property, rich
estate I can take too
You take aphorisms – she who
sings tires, she who laughs lasts
In the dirt cicadas
rouse, dear and I am
not laughing and so on
And the raucous kids, frisson
and so on, that rattle about
and cheer, whee and so on
I will a stoic
say it—America
*
it has umlauts over it
America it is aching
from under, hex in its stars
(no one can locate it)
On the stairwell with laughter
with frisson, we are up
past the pictures and so on
Where is solemnity when
you need it, demands one of us
Where is solemnity
I reiterate—they who sing tire
they who laugh last, America
it can go last, us as ones
to get to sleep and then so on
BLAZE
What pleasures of the fat
chemicals from the bark
released (scent
the tiger stalks
so it might twist
the sinews of thy heart
ever as thy but watcheth)
and weigh the father
air of our intentions
the smoke the thick
miscreating
the thick-
ness miscreating
or helping us
miscreate this to where
a tower is broken
(melted) and floods
fill the hollows beneath
INSTEAD OF “POETRY” WE WENT TO THE BEACH
When the world ends, much will be cheap. Much
of the sky and ink stones also. So let’s meet
this fall with our depth, and raise it
an apple. This a light meal.
For our appetites for
our nourishing have yet to find form,
for the wet air
gathering. And the asymmetry, the hills and
open field. In a drizzle the open-
ness asks for rescue and is too much. The rain
the deluge that leaves us beside
shelters that leave us aside.
When the fickle pops of a sparkler, when
will they finally yield
firecrackers. When the torpor oxidizes,
wūlóng. Like leaves
in scatter, scatter, impressions of all
present abiding. Washed colors
then better. Fall then
deeper. Even now. Trespass. Wade
wiped in light.
NOTES DISCARDED FROM A WǓXIÁ FILM
Each stone placed
unsettles the heart
So may I tousle
the blackness
of your hair?
“No.
its luxuries its
revelations are
my art. My
snakelets my dùdōu
my hairpins.”
But your hands
are open now. See
your fingers dance.
“That is
an illusion they move
See they
mimic ice”
