limestone.
You’ve survived in a harsh
habitat.
You learned a new language
alone.
They’ve saved for you the thorny
labor.
To many, your life is worth
little.
Still—
month by month,
year after year,
immigrant of burden,
you gather prickly pears
in the desert.
