Inmigrante

Te han arrancado de suelo

convulso

Te han trasplantado en tierra

caliza

Has sobrevivido en un hábitat

agreste

Has aprendido un nuevo idioma

solo

Para ti reservan el trabajo

espinoso

Para muchos tu vida vale

poco

  Aun así,

mes a mes,

año tras año,

inmigrante trejo

recolectas tunas

en el desierto.

Immigrant

They tore you from a soil

convulsed.

They transplanted you into a land of

limestone.

You’ve survived in a harsh

habitat.

You learned a new language

alone.

They’ve saved for you the thorny

labor.

To many, your life is worth

little.

Still—

month by month,

year after year,

immigrant of burden,

you gather prickly pears

in the desert.
