Communities were strong in the areas of Manchester and Salford, where Shirley produced much of her work. People then spent a great deal of time on the streets, and in neighborhoods like these, where multigenerational families remained close, the elderly could find friendships and continue to feel part of a community.
As a documenter, Shirley was interested in the young and the elderly, and as such, she left us with a wealth of material for generations to ponder, reflect on, and learn from.
