SUJATA BHATT (born 1956) is an Indian poet who writes primarily in English. She is known for her evocative poetry, which explores themes of identity, language, cultural displacement, and the complexities of memory. Born in Ahmedabad, India, Bhatt spent parts of her childhood in India and the United States, and her writing reflects this cross-cultural experience, often blending Indian cultural elements with global perspectives.

Her debut collection, Brunizem (1988), won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Asia), establishing her as an important voice in contemporary poetry. Bhatt’s other notable collections include Monkey Shadows (1991), A Colour for Solitude (2002), and Poppies in Translation (2015). Her work is known for its lyrical quality and its meditations on language—particularly the experience of writing in a language that is not one’s mother tongue.

Bhatt’s poetry has been widely anthologized, and she has received numerous awards for her work, including the Cholmondeley Award and a poetry prize from the Arts Council of England.
